Experimental Production of Atrophied and Partly De- Ficient Limbs (phocomelias) in the Axolotl Embryo*

چکیده

The many different types and variations of deformities of limbs in animals and man are usually described and grouped from the morphological or genetical point of view. A very few biological experiments have been done for the purpose of elucidating the causes which produce special types of deformities in the embryo. In an earlier paper (Brandt, 1940) the author has shown that supernumerary limbs such as reduplications and some higher degrees of multiplications can be produced experimentally in the frog embryo by special methods. Contrasting with the group of supernumerary limbs is the group showing stunted growth or even absence of the limb as a whole. On the other hand, there may be absence of parts of a single limb such as phocomelias and stunted growth or abnormal position of the digits. The following experiments are the first which have been published concerning the problem of experimental production of various types of atrophied limbs in the amphibian embryo.

Differentiation of ectoderm implanted into the primordium of the limb bud in the amphibian embryo and its influence upon the limb.

It was shown by Brandt (1944) that phocomelias and atrophied limbs can be produced experimentally after deep implantation of embryonic ectoderm into the primordium of the limb bud in the tail-bud stage (Harrison's stage no. 35) of the amblystoma embryo. The following microscopical analysis of the operated specimens shows some new results which concern the histological changes of the implanted e...

Lineage tracing of genome-edited alleles reveals high fidelity axolotl limb regeneration

Salamanders are unparalleled among tetrapods in their ability to regenerate many structures, including entire limbs, and the study of this ability may provide insights into human regenerative therapies. The complex structure of the limb poses challenges to the investigation of the cellular and molecular basis of its regeneration. Using CRISPR/Cas, we genetically labelled unique cell lineages wi...

Probability aspects of supernumerary production in the regenerating limbs of the axolotl, Ambystoma mexicanum.

The applicability of deterministic models, and in particular the polar co-ordinate model of French, Bryant & Bryant (1976), to the regenerative process has been investigated by performing ipsilateral blastemal rotations of varying angle on the fore and hind limbs of the axolotl. The results show that the frequency of supernumerary production rises with increasing angle to reach a peak at 180 de...

Primary Congenital Lymphedema in the Upper Limbs of Children: Case Series

The aim of the present study was to report a case series involving the treatment of primary congenital lymphedema using the Godoy method. Eight children (seven girls and one boy) with primary congenital lymphedema of the upper limbs treated at the Godoy Clinic. A retrospective clinical trial was conducted to evaluate treatment for primary congenital l...

Experiments on developing limb buds of the axolotl Ambystoma mexicanum.

Various experiments were performed on the limb buds of axolotls to compare the behaviour of amphibian limbs with that previously reported for chick limbs. Following removal of the tip or whole limb bud, extensive powers of regulation were observed since complete limbs always formed. Similarly after distal to proximal grafts intercalary regulation occurred to produce perfect limbs and after prox...
